Two professional sumo wrestlers, Ozeki Kotomitsuki and his training partner Otake, have been suspended by the sport’s authorities for accusations concerning illegal gambling. The wrestlers were going to be fired by the Japanese Sumo Association. But later the Group rethought their actions and reduced the punishment to suspension. Expulsion would be the greatest punishment and the wrestlers would not only lose their chance to compete but even their retirement allowances. That’s what I call Russian roulette… I mean Japanese roulette
The entire situation arose when the two wrestlers placed a huge number of bets on professional baseball matches. To make things worse the money for these bets is said to have come from Japanese mobsters. The entire situation has thoroughly upset the whole world of Japanese sumo wrestling and many fans are asking for the Nagoya Grand Sumo Tournament to be canceled. The Sumo Association is trying to get the entire situation under control and is trying to regain the trust and confidence of fans.
Gambling is a taboo in Japan and for sumo wrestlers, who are given great respect in the country, to indulge in such activities has angered and saddened many fans. Hopefully faith in these wrestling stars will be restored soon.
